On Wednesday 4th September Waveney Sailability hosted a day for Blesma members (charity for limbless veterans) so they could try the Hansa dinghies and also go for a sail in one of our larger boats. Most of our visitors had never sailed before and the lively and gusty conditions made for exciting sailing, especially when a passing squall soaked those on the water who hadn’t managed to run for cover.
A ‘healthy’ lunch from the chippie accompanied by tea, coffee and cake provided by the Sailability tea ladies allowed our visitors time to recover before going back into the boats for a race organised by Kerr.
Each visitor was allocated an instructor and a briefing explained how the course was set out and the important information that sailing is a non contact sport; do not crash the boats. There was much hilarity and shouting across the water until Mike and Jackie eventually won. Unfortunately a second race was not possible as the wind became much stronger and white horses appeared on the broad.
Sailability volunteers then de-rigged the boats and stored them ready for the following week’s sailing.
