Oulton Week 18th – 23rd August 2019

Date added: August 24, 2019

Our Hansa class races were on Monday, Wednesday and Friday as usual, The weather was kind to us except for Monday afternoon when those racing got very wet in the downpour. Apart from that the sun shone and the wind blew; a bit too strong and gusty at times but it made for exciting racing. All ten of our Hansa dinghies were in use. However, only seven entrants did enough races to qualify but some raced just for the fun of it.

The race on Wednesday morning caused a bit of confusion as the Slow Handicap (the start before ours) had a general recall because too many boats were over the line. Our sailors seemed confused by this and didn’t start on the next signal, as they should have. All apart from Vic, who started but sailed in the wrong direction to Mark 8, which had been moved from its previous position. Others followed but realised the mistake and then sailed the correct course.

Competitors who qualified finished in the following order:- Vic Pennell, Tony Barkes, Jerry Ballam, Owen Boar, Bob Waters, Debbie Atwell, Sophia Adams and crew. Congratulations to Debbie, sailing single-handed in gusty conditions with some big boats competing around her. Amazing courage and determination.

All ten boats competed in the Bloodbath with Jerry taking the trophy for the first Hansa across the line. It was a good week, enjoyed by all I think. Many, many thanks to all our volunteer helpers, particularly Richard, our Commodore, who sorted all the muddles and kept the scores. It couldn’t happen without you.
